Tatei Haramara, Our Mother Ocean, is the planetary womb of life and all that exists on earth. She is honored and revered by the Huichol people, who make long journeys to the Pacific Ocean in the west, to bring her gifts and offerings from their mountain homeland in the east. As they stand on the shore they perform rituals to ask their Mother Goddess for blessings, luck and health. They cry and are overcome with emotion as they pray to her and give thanks for the rain clouds and abundance she sends to nurture their crops, and the blessings she imparts night and day to all the world. Newborn babies are introduced to her at a sacred place in San Blas, Nayarit, where they are anointed and blessed with her sacred waters. The parents take small bottles of sea water and moist sand to the mountain homeland where rituals are held in designated areas of the family’s cornfields to honor Tatei Haramara’s eternal cycle of life.
