Jaguars are considered by the Wixarika (Huichol) people to be wise guardian spirits of the night, who guide people in their peyote visions and dreams to the supernatural realms where they receive sacred knowledge. The jaguar spirits are messengers of the creators, such as Father Sun in the east and the Rain Mothers of the west, where rainclouds emerge from the life giving coastal jungles. The spots of the jaguar represent the eyes that see through the blinding darkness of the invisible spirit world. The hunters and shamanic apprentices magically invoke the jaguar spirits for their strength, endurance and tracking skills, and for luck and supernatural powers on their shamanic path.
