Huichol shamans tell us that when the first ancestors were created in the middle of the ocean, they were guided to the shore by the turtle spirits that reside each of the five directions. Ever since then turtles, “ayetzi”, have been the special helpers of the creator goddess Tacutsi Nakawe, also known as Grandmother Growth. She gave her beloved pet turtles the power to make rain clouds from their breath, and they became the guardians of all of the fresh water springs, rivers and lakes. Turtles replenish the precious water that all species depend on, and for this reason, the Huichols treat them with the utmost respect.
